How Free Vet Services Help Us Save More Cats

The Backyard Bandits’ Big Day: Exams, Microchips & a Whole Lot of Gratitude
This week, our little “Backyard Bandits” officially had their first full vet exams — vaccines, microchips, registrations… the whole kitten kaboodle. And honestly? They crushed it.
We braced for chaos in the car, but they surprised us by being absolute angels. The vet staff even called them “very sweet.” (We’ve noticed a pattern — cats adopted from Allie’s Cat House tend to get that compliment a lot 😼💅)
But the real star of this update isn’t just the kittens…
It’s the community support that made this visit possible.
The Problem: Vet Care Is Expensive — Especially for Small Rescues
Anyone in rescue knows this already, but for those who don’t:
Initial vet visits are expensive. Vaccines, microchips, registration, exams… the bill adds up fast, especially when you’re taking in multiple cats at once.
When our cats are adopted out, the adoption fee doesn’t even come close to covering these medical costs — and that’s okay. We’re not doing this to break even. We’re doing it to give them a chance.
But the truth is:
Without help, small rescues like ours simply couldn’t afford to keep saying “yes” to the next cat.
The Solution: Community Programs That Make Rescue Possible
Thanks to the SPCA and Pets In Need of Greater Cincinnati, the Backyard Bandits got their exams, vaccines, microchips, and registrations completely free.
Services like these are lifesavers — literally.
They allow rescues like us to keep going, keep helping, and keep getting more cats off the streets and into safe, loving homes. When every dollar counts, these programs are the reason we can say yes to that next stray wandering into someone’s backyard.
And these services aren’t just for cats —
they’re for dogs too.
(Yes… we said the D-word. Don’t tell the cats. They already think they run the world. 🐱🙄🐶)
